Gold Cup + Field Turf = Bad Soccer
Hello, earth to US Soccer Federation, WTF with the field selection for the Gold Cup?? The USMNT just gained deserved repsect at the confederations cup, and our Federation pulls this crap of putting games on turf fields! With all the great stadiums with real grass fields I can't believe we are using stadiums with turf. Yeah, these places have people that come to games yada yada, but, so do many other places. Let's take a look at the stadiums
- Giants Stadium (New Jersery) - Artificial (FieldTurf) (temporary grass to be installed) (Yippee, lose slabs of none connected turf, I have played on a surface like this and it will cause the players problems)
- Gillette Stadium (Foxboro)- Artificial (FieldTurf) (this field used to have grass, but, with NE winters, it didn't look good for Monday Night Football!)
- Qwest Field (Seattle) - Artificial (FieldTurf)
- FIU Stadium (Miami) - Artificial (FieldTurf)
- Dallas Cowboys New Stadium (Dallas) - Artificial (Matrix)
- Soilder Field (Chicago) - Grass
- Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum - Grass
- Lincoln Financial Field (Philidelpha)- Grass
- University of Phoenix Stadium (Phoenix)- Grass
- The Home Depot Center (Los Angeles)- Grass
- Reliant Stadium (Houston)- Grass
- Columbus Crew Stadium (Columbus) - Grass
Let's look at the fields they selected that have the fake stuff. All of these are huge stadiums, and they are not even full! Even though attendance is good, 30,000 folks in a 100,000 seat stadium it looks empty. So that makes me wonder if the ticket sales are enough to cover the rent on the stadium?
For example here in Dallas, The Cowboys Stadium, a 1 Billion Dollar new stadium with fake grass and 100,000 seats, (Umm let me see, we are in Dallas Texas, we get nice warm weather 10 months out of the year, so I think someone here can figure out how to grow grass)! We have 2 great stadiums with real grass, The Cotton Bowl seats 80,000 and Pizza Hut Park (Home of FC Dallas) which seats about 20,000. So it befuddles me that we what to apease the stadium owers by putting the Gold Cup Games in stadiums that are not suited for soccer. Soccer is meant to be played on grass in the elements.
I hope this lights a fire under your soccer butt and you take some action. Oh, really what I mean is, that eventhough the Gold Cup games are in these crappy stadiums, please protest by going to the game having a Hot Dog and a Beverage of choice and act snobby about the crappy fake pitch!
Love the beautiful game, play with passion!
Till next time,
Tim
